Anyone else having problems with the voting widget? In Safari 3.1.1 I get an error saying that I need to enable cookies (they are). (Worse: the error message has a \n - that’s an actual backslash and n, not a newline). (Works fine in Flock).

I think someone is stuffing the ballot box for Kristina, Leah, and Andrea. I’m refreshing the results and watching those three get a ton of votes on a steady basis. And you can re-vote if you just flush the Zoho cookie from your browser. The voting started off fairly close, then all of a sudden those three shot way ahead and continue to get votes. It just doesn’t fit the kind of distribution you’d expect based on the comments to date.

Well Andrea got my vote, but it was a close one, I was a difficult decision between Andrea and Leah for me, but the deal breaker? Mahalo with the shotgun, hell yes! But on a more serious note, whilst Leah is obviously the more professional of the two, her interview skills are excellent. but to me it all felt like an act. Andrea’s got character, and I wanna see more of it!

I enjoy Sarah’s work the most.
It hits the mark the best in many ways:
Sarah’s….
Choice of topic was the best - most in tune with Mahalo theme
One of few contestants to reply to people online
Only one who knows how to post video answers in Mahalo
Only one who registered and learned to be a Mahalo member
Sarah replies in ALL forums I have seen in & out of Mahalo quickly & appropriately
Sarah is already successful at vlog & web blog work so is a great prospect
Sarah guarantees presentation competence with a theatre bachelors degree
Sarah does not ruin the performance with technical incompetence
Some specifics:
She frames the picture with varying backgrounds & participant heights
She does not let herself or interviewee be talking heads - action is planned
She does not let herself or interviewee show off or lecture to the camera
She engages participants into a conversation/story & draws the audience in
She is a skilled interviewer and knows how to make everyone shine & be comfortable
She takes risks appropriate for her story eg. non-sexy outfit, slow pace when called for
She is sensitive to and true to her story giving a genuine reporting result - not fluff
Sarah works hard - participates and is not afraid to try things on camera (hula)
Sarah has a great sense of humor, is open, and is an excellent communicator
Sarah is unselfish and makes the interviewee the star of the episode, not herself
I learn so much watching Sarah’s work and it is thoroughly enjoyable
Sarah cares about her work, about people, and improving her professional work
Sarah is clearly motivated to do her best and she would lift Mahalo to another level
I have great faith in Sarah as a Mahalo vlog host - I think she has great positive potential! Good luck Sarah!

Firstly, I think the episode by Andrea Rene made me cringe. Not because she did poorly, but rather, the weapon safe skills were exceptionally poor. However, I still think Andrea has something special to offer.
My order of preference is
1. Andrea, - exciting
2. Sarah, - safe and reliable (I don’t think she could do a bad episode.
3. Leah - wow, can I get her phone number.
The stand out performer of the Vlog Idol series is Lon. Before this I was wondering under what rock did they find this nerd, but after the yogurt skits, I have to say the boy has talent.

This is SO tough. I love both Leah and Andrea and still think Mahalo should select them BOTH to alternate shows, but if I’m forced to pick, I’d have to go with Leah. She possesses everything the host for this show has to have: intelligence, charm, great speaking and interviewing skills, energy, personality, and BEAUTY.

Forget all the other comments about pretty faces. Sarah has the right personality and subtle expressions to make for a lasting host. She is adept with technology (see her blog) and has a great ability to connect with the viewer. Rather than the other ditsy dullards, Sarah is the right choice and will keep Mahalo going strong. Pick Sarah Atwood!!

We really liked Sarah Atwoods personality but just don’t think she came
across very well in her last production. Maybe a little hula dancing would
have helped.

If you pick the girl that thinks shooting guns is a good idea, I will never ever watch Mahalo Daily ever again. I don’t mind that you recommend people try things I will never get to do as I am from the UK and can’t do things in California, I don’t mind that Mahalo can come over as a giant advert for the thing you are featuring, Veronica was entertaining and best when she was doing techie stuff. Guns are not OK. A presenter that picks shooting a gun (even in a safe environment) as a fun thing to try shows a serious lack of judgement and a serious lack of understanding of a world view - guns are not cool where I come from, they kill people.

- Most polished
- Most memorable
- Makes me not want to wait a whole day for the next episode
- Million dollar smile…and enthusiasm to go with it
- Did a good story that kept my interest
- Probably caters to a broader audience demographic; not just young and cute, but also more slightly older, more polished; someone I can take seriously

I’d say Andrea Rene’s on camera presence is the best of the six but the Hummel, D’Emilio, and Heimann’s topics seemed more interesting or at least more appealing to the Mahalo audience. Rene got my vote though.

Leah I thought was the most comfortable in front of the camera. And although I originally thought her chosen topic would be lame, I ended up intrigued and really did enjoy it. To me that is what defines a quality host, someone who is going to be in control and finish a quality product no matter the subject matter…

I just wanted to thank everyone for getting involved in VLOG Idol this far- it has been quite an experience. Thanks for your comments good or bad - just glad you watched! +Just remember that was one episode and I have lots of other ideas and qualities to offer that you haven’t even seen yet :-) Working with Mahalo Daily would be the ideal job and is worth it all! Oh and just to let you know (in regards to one comment I read) after all of the braces and headgear I had to wear as a kid it would be a waste not to smile. Plus my teeth are so big that even when I don’t smile you see them …
I also wanted to congratulate all of the other contestants for their hard work in producing 5 great episodes. So much talent - and I admire you all for your uniqueness. It isn’t easy putting yourself out there for all to see and judge. I have only smashed my computer twice:-) Good Luck Ladies….

Somewhere between Mahala al Rubra in the UAR and Maharashthra, India, a virutal Hawaiian Island welcomes vloggers. There the competition mingled 6 breezy action-oriented reports from charming female on-camera talent. This viewer was most charmed by Leah D’Emilio’s visit to the Capoeira group. The joy and postive experience that Leah presented were from the average person’s point of view and the community brought about by making music and dance together allowed this viewer to see himself in the setting much more than in any of the other pieces. It might have been the charm of the beginners marveling at their progress. It might have been that no one seemed to the “formal” instructor, but all shared their energy and their secrets in a social and game-like environment suffused with the energy of making music and dancing, actions that release the inhibitions and relax the individual in the face of competitive combat. True Capoeiras consider it clumsy and amateurish to hurt their opponen. The best come close enough to create a breeze where the foot or fist might have landed, and particularly in time with the music, as if the dancer might dance on his opponent. Leah conveyed the joy and comraderie that none of the other segments did.

Sarah was much more natural in her questioning. She appear much more at ease with the mic and the camera. She comes across as more intelligent. Not saying she is, just she has an aura of intelligence. She’s cute.

As an independent filmmaker who has done some casting, I found Leah to have the best on-screen presence and energy while keeping focus on the subject. I felt some of the other high-energy ladies drew too much emphasis from their subjects. Leah brings the viewer into the story without making herself the focus. All the contestants did very well, and I could easily see several of them as vlog hosts, but I think Leah is your winner.

I think Mahalo should give Lon an office job and hire all six of them. Monday thru Saturday you would have a different host and with a week to work on a story they could do some really great work. Besides, in a few months some are going to get other job offers for more money and jump ship. If you only take one or two then we will have to go through this all over again.

Have to admit, I really wanted Kristina to blow me away, but she didn’t, it was pretty good considering her experience, but she was far too nervous. Leah was also very good, as she has a very nice interviewing style.
However I was completely blown away by Andrea’s video. She was fun, she was energetic and she had me smiling throughout. She gets my vote!!

I’ve been watching this poll the few hours it’s been up and judging by the way the numbers are moving, it seems to me like it’s being rigged. Perhaps consider limiting each IP address to one vote? As someone else mentioned, it’s quite easy to get multiple votes under the current system.
Anyway, my vote would go to Andrea Rene :), she has an excellent on-screen presence and it doesn’t hurt that she’s adorable as well.

I thought Andrea, Michelle & Kristina were the most engaging and personable. Andrea was very lighthearted and playful. Michelle had great confidence and a great smile; her whole piece just flowed well. Kristina was charmingly awkward and asked great questions.

After watching all of the contestants, I think that Leah D’Emilio stood out as superior. This is not a knock on the others as I think that most brought something good to the show, but Leah has the polish and character and look that show needs.

hmmm… it has been noted that the voting system is flawed… and several people seem to “stuffing the box” as they say… So, it may be best for “Mahalo Daily” to throw out this false democratic process and get a little more creative with choosing the winner… HERE ARE SOME IDEAS…
1. Mud Wrestling… We’re talking Round Robin tournament… whoever pins the most, gets the host position…
2. Free Style Rap Competition… gansta, one on one knock out! The more you dis the closer you are to the Lon Kiss!
3. 80’s Style Break Dance Competition… everyone grabs their cardboard box, their boom boxes, and puts on their parachute pants, heads back to 3rd Street Promenade so you can all show the people of Santa Monica what it’s really all about!!!!
4. Trivial Pursuit… Game of the Six… whoever fills the pie first, fills the position…
5. Put the Names in a hat and draw one out… oh… wait, that would be unfair… like the voting right now!!! Don’t do that!
6. Pick the “Vlog Idol” winner yourselves! You all know with whom you really want to work… So… stuff the ballot box of the person you want to be your true champion and call it a day!
So often these days, we see the wrong people winning the competition because of flawed voting techniques… ummm… look at our country after the last 8 years. (That happened twice for that guy!)… so… let’s learn from our past mistakes and listen to your gut on this one! (Sarah!) Do the Right Thing!!!!!

And in response to Jimmy Cap. Calling these girls cheaters is not a nice comment. If you haven’t done your homework they have a following outside of Mahalo. I’m sure if you were to Google their names you can find a lot of information on all of them and see that this is not their first time having exposure on the web. Besides if you are saying they themselves are stacking the votes that is a bad statement for you to make.
I saw yesterday that in a matter of maybe an hour that Michelle Hummel received over 300 votes and in her defense I’m sure she didn’t do it herself. People do have lives outside the internet. Jobs for example to make money!!! Can’t live without the mighty old dollar.

Hands down, Leah D’Demilio, is the best. Why are we even voting? She is by far the most professional and smartest one of them all…. I’m looking at these results and Kristina is in the lead, but in her show, she was leaning away from the interviewer and not looking comfortable and some of her questioning was not the greatest. And Andrea is just a little too giddy to be professional enough for the show.

I’m sorry, but the latest figures are absolutely RIDICULOUS. Someone or a group of someones are obviously “stuffing the ballot.” Kristina in second place, AHEAD of Leah?? She was nowhere near as good in her episode, with amateurish questions (including the oh-so brilliant opener, “Dave, what is it to be a mixing engineer?” WTF?? What kind of question is that??), low energy, very visible nervousness in front of the camera, etc… How some of you are picking her ahead of Leah, who is MILES more polished, charismatic and professional, is beyond comprehension.
No offense to Kristina but she isn’t in either Leah’s or Andrea’s league. Mahalo better not be deciding this solely on fan votes, ’cause this proves something’s wrong with the system.

@JohnK - Actually, ANDREA is in first place. You may want to get your eyesight checked. And to you and “On the level,” as well as whatever other aliases you have on here, all of these girls are strong in character and personality. None of them should be denigrated. But the fact remains that this is *NOT* a popularity contest for who already had the biggest online following. It’s who did the *BEST* job hosting their individual episodes. And in that department, Kristina was left in the dust by not just Leah and Andrea, but Michelle, as well. like right now leah d’emilio got like 20+ votes in less than 7 min! it’s really simple if you’re using firefox just go to tools then to options then to privacy, push the Show cookies button, search for the “zoho” cookie, erase it, then accept all the way, and then refresh and there you can vote again and again.

Zlatan, Leah’s been in the lead since the beginning, or running a close second to Andrea. It’s only in the past day that these Kristina fanatics have jumped out of the woodwork to stuff the ballot in her favor, using exactly the technique you described. Her meteoric increase in votes in such a short amount of time is proof of that, after languishing well behind the leaders. In the case of those recent votes for Leah, I’m more inclined to believe it’s a legit surge of non-repeat votes, considering her more consistent popularity here at Mahalo. Hopefully that steady support will give her the ultimate “win,” because I definitely agree with you that the voting system is flawed and is helping the subpar Kristina to this miraculous number.

I agree, if your favorite person isnt winning, it must be fixed. Just like if the football team your betting on loses, it had to be a fixed game. If you lose at a poker hand, the cards were rigged. If you lose your court case, its because of your color.

My vote is for Leah… I thought she was the most professional, intelligent, creative and natural. She stood out way ahead for me. I also liked Sarah but would like to have seen someone different actually do the hula, the content fit well with Mahalo. I felt her professionalism and natural ability and I really like her engagement with this whole process too. Andrea slurs her words too much and that would get old pretty quickly. It seemed that most of the comments about her were from ultra macho types who like somewhat of a dumb girl image. I agree with Jeff and a couple of others that suggested another round of competition with the top three. Or, hire more than one and time would surely tell the best.

I’ve seen Michelle doing interviews and talk shows for several other programs. I think she is intelligent, articulate, kind, and persistent. She has my vote!!

And to those of you who addressed my episode specifically, yes, I had quite a lengthy safety lesson prior to my shooting range experience, and I apologize that I only had 4 minutes to squeeze over 60 minutes of footage into. I agree with Lee J. Yi. This is yet more proof that the voting system is completely broken. By this evening, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Sarah Atwood go from her current last-place position of 212 votes to 3212 and the lead. It’s just so unbelievable that I almost feel like laughing. Nadine had about 1/3 the votes of Andrea about 11 hours ago, and now she’s nearly 1200 ahead? Please.

My ranking:
1. Sarah
2. Kristina
these two struck me as special so they were ones I looked at in depth,
the others did not impress enough to rank - each had some problem so
I did not think they would fit Mahalo
1. Sarah: talent + vlog experience = well presented show that guarantees a good host
2. Kristina: seems to show talent + NO vlog experience = a risk - will she or won’t she learn to become a good host in the future?
1. Sarah: a sure thing demonstrates success from experience and present performance level
2. Kristina: maybe potential but she is a project - untrained - will she reach levels equal to Sarah? do you have resources to take her there? does he have the real capacity to reach Sarah in professional competence or will you find that she falls short and never hits it and does not perform as needed even with help
Who to pick? I would say go with the current complete number one: Sarah - a sure winner as host.
What may be interesting and fertile and exciting though would be to pick BOTH.
1. Sarah the host
2. Kristina the apprentice
It is not fair to take an inexperienced host and not give them resources to succeed if an inexperienced host like Kristina is picked.
Sarah could teach Kristina and as a duo they could provide a synergy that just one host never could meet. Also, with synergy, you end up with one plus one equals more than the sum - an exponential leap upwards!
Two hosts would potentially double the exposure Mahalo had on the global marketplace and both do have their own niches - tech, film, theater combined
with contemporary popular music = a powerful one two punch!
THEREFORE: WIN: WIN: DOUBLE YOUR HOSTS! DOUBLE THE VIEWING PLEASURE! MAYBE TRIPLE OR QUADRUPLE YOUR PROFITS????? :-)

(I Don’t have time to compile detailed reasons why my number 2. Kristina is good, but Sarah is still better - up to you Kristina fans if you want to add more detail on Kristina as Kristina did a lot that was right also……)
Sarah has my vote.
1. Sara’s choice of topic was brilliant.
Which other contestant has a topic more relevant than this to Mahalo?
“Oh Mahalo for coming” says the interviewee naturally without prompting -
and the topic is hula dancing - where the company name Mahalo comes from!
2. Other contestants lectured to the audience, posed for the camera,
had their interviewees pose for the camera or speak to it, there was poor
or no interaction between interviewee or interviewer, there were talking heads,
action was chopped in and did not fit into the flow of the show, etc……..
Sara welcomed the audience in quickly then got to the point - the story!
keeping full control unobtrusively and focussed on facilitating the best story
possible.
She actively engaged the person, good eye contact, interacted, led with
questions and suggested activities, set them at ease, was friendly and natural,
not self-conscious, hilarious sense of humor and funny faces, made it fun.
Sarah had a beginning, middle and end and outtake joking at the end showing
all interaction went well.
3. Sarah’s choice of costume, setting, positioning, framing of the picture all excellent.
Sarah begins in front of a fountain for interest and depth.
Sarah wears a pastel flowing outfit with lei that sets the tone for the story.
Sarah varies position of herself and interviewee, and backgrounds.
Interviewee on right - same level.
Interviewee on left raised with Sarah in student position at her feet on floor.
Sarah raised level on right when actively speaking to interviewee.
Shots of hula pictures at start and in background in interview for interest.
Shots on horizontal couch giving depth to picture frame and focus on people.
4. Sarah gives opportunities for interviewee to shine, be interesting, and show action.
Prepared question to show the instruments and demonstrate them for action.
Invites interviewee to teach her how to make hula moves.
5. Sarah understands the topic at hand well - right to the point and chooses an appropriate method to present the topic.
“Hands are the most important aspect of hula because they tell a story”
comes up in the text onscreen - so instead of going for “sex appeal” to win the contest and have half naked dancing bodies she chooses meaning over flash and focusses the interview in closeup so we can see and appreciate hands and the content of what is being shared about hula in a genuine and not crass commercial way. Sarah is brave, no quick fix or selling out to commercialism, she does the job as it deserves no matter what the risk.
6. Sarah is animated, personable and fun to watch.
Immediately she welcomes you into her story with a smile and a let’s go and see together, a sharing of “my idea” to learn about hula.
She laughs with the interviewee not at them, she laughs at herself learning the hand movements making the interviewee relaxed and more animated.
Sarah leads a good sit down story out of something that could have been a
let’s stand and watch the teacher place my hands right, or a talking heads history of hula in Hawaii - thank you Sarah for bringing the topic to life!
7. Sarah always does a good job, her best, using all her experience and knowledge, improving as she goes and it is always interesting - and her best is pretty darned great! What more could you ask of a Mahalo host?

This Idol contest is much the same as American Idol you get 95 million votes for the final from one million people voting 95 times each. People like American Idol and Mahlo could implement systems that would correct this problem and allow only one vote form phone number or IP address. But then they can’t report 95 million votes. After all how impressive would it be if people knew the true number for Mahalo idol is likely less then 200 people voted.

That said the person they are replacing Veronica Belmont was a professional geek with true geek credentials. And as such she had the potential to make great shows about tech things that I would have found very interesting. Unfortunately Mahalo never did fully explore her inner geek and likely this is part of the reason she went on to other things and now co-hosts a true geek show on Revison3.
Mahalo has selected a group of for the most part professional actress who has already done some movie or TV work in the past. That is not to disrespect professional actress such as Nadine Heimann (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1827516/resume), Michelle Hummel (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1732478/), Leah Demilio (http://lastheplace.com/2007/07/22/spotlight-on-actors-leah-demilio/ ) or Sarah Atwood (http://resumes.actorsaccess.com/sarahatwood).
Andrea Rene has already done a number of video blogs that are more entertainment and not tech related such as this (http://www.getthedaily.com/108748 ).
The only one I can’t find any acting credentials for is Kristina Allison. I am thinking she is likely the same Kristina Allison who works for I SonicPool’s audio and video finishing departments. If this is the same Kristina then the interview she did was very much about a subject she likely new very well. Very smart for her to do so. If it was technology related you would want someone with a stronger tech background then someone who has used a computer.
It looks to me that Mahalo is following the direction of a talent show like American Idol then it may not be following a format technology related professionals would really like to watch.

I can only assume they are going for an eye candy factor here and as such as a Layla Kayleigh from G4TV the feed. As such if you go back and look at early works of Layla Kayleigh it isn’t that great. She was always hot but it took her a while to get the delivery down. So with that in mind I would say that Nadine Heimann has the right energy and look and in time I am sure she will get the skills.
By the way I do agree that Andrea Rene was very good. I just can’t support the gun culture and the girl didn’t know enough not to point the gun at the instructor after she shot. C’mon… We don’t need to promote Gun’s do we?
