4 Reasons Why the Warning Light of Your Airbag Is On

Drivers know for sure that their vehicle’s airbag warning light is a certain indicator of a problem with the airbag system. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, airbags save almost 3,000 lives each year. If the airbag warning light is on, this means the airbag may not deploy properly in case you get into a road accident! Have this problem checked out in your local service center right away. Here are 5 of the most common reasons why the airbagwarning light in your car is on.

  1. Faulty Clock Spring

In a modern car, the steering wheel has all sorts of gadgetry – from stereo buttons and cruise control to paddle shifters and airbags. These accessories require power, and here comes the clock spring, a very special electrical cord inside the steering wheel. The clock springs enable the steering wheel to turn without breaking the electrical connection to the accessories inside. If you have a faulty clock spring, you might see the airbag warning light, indicating a problem with the airbag on the driver’s side. You’ll know for sure that the clock spring is to blame, in case your steering wheel stereo controls, horn, and cruise control all stop working.

  1. Airbag battery backup depleted

The battery is located under the hood, on most cars, just behind the front fender. In case of a front-end accident, the battery could be hit first, disrupting the electrical connection to the airbags, thus preventing them from deployment. Because of this, modern vehicles have an airbag battery backup, located elsewhere in the vehicle. This battery backup is being charged by the regular battery. If you are experiencing troubles with your charging system, your battery is about to fail, or the battery backup is simply not working properly, all of this could trigger the airbag warning light.

  1. Triggered crash sensors

Have you recently been involved in a minor fender-bender, and there was no sign of airbags? You may find that your airbag warning light is on soon after. This is because the crash sensors have been triggered, but not to the point they triggered the airbags themselves. However, once the crash sensors have been triggered, they might need a replacement, even in situations where the airbags did not go off.

  1. Failed airbag module

If any of the aforementioned situations, thus far, does not apply to you, but the airbag warning light remains, head to your local auto repair center. The airbags are a complex system with all kinds of computers, sensors, and other delicate components that help with your protection in case of a crash. If there’s a problem with one of these computer modules, the entire system might stop working, and the airbag warning light will be on. If this happens, turn to your factory-trained technician for a proper test and repair of your airbag system.
