Vehicle Fluids to Check before the Spring
Vehicle Fluids to Check before the SpringThe warm months of the year are right around the corner. With the coming of spring, there are a number of fun activities that begin. A number of them involve using your car, which is why we will discuss what vehicle fluids you will need to check on as a preparation for the coming spring.
1. Motor Oil
Is it really a surprise that we’re starting with this one? Motor oil is one of the most important things that you need to periodically check and ensure that its condition is still good. The fluid is very important when it comes to the performance of the engine because its task is to keep the moving parts of the engine properly lubricated. It should be done every 3,000 miles or so, but bear in mind that it depends on the make and model you drive, so it would be best if you consulted your owner’s manual. However, there are a couple of reasons why it is best to not only check on, but also change the oil right before the spring. The first reason is simple: the viscosity of the oil used during the winter is different form the one used during the spring (and in fact during all of the warmer months of the year). The second reason would be because you can examine the condition of the engine while you are changing the oil. One last piece of advice regarding the oil change and the examination of the engine – if you don’t feel confident enough to do it yourself, go to an auto repair center. It is best to have everything done properly the first time around.
2. Coolant/ Antifreeze
During the warm weather it is important to not let your vehicle overheat. Check on the coolant and, if needed, top it off. You might need to change the coolant altogether if you haven’t done it in a while because it actually develops corrosive properties that can damage the system. Better have the coolant flushed than have to pay hefty bills for repairs later on.
3. Transmission Fluid
First, let us state that the transmission fluid change period is not short. We are listing it in this article because, even though this change is not frequent, it has to be performed occasionally, and the perfect time to check on this fluid would be while you are inspecting the others. If you choose to ignore the condition of the transmission fluid, there could be dire consequences which can result in costly repairs.
4. Brake Fluid
If you do not check the condition of the brake fluid, you can experience a number of unpleasant scenarios such as less responsive brakes, having to push harder on the brakes so as to be able to stop the vehicle, and so on. Please, ensure that the brake fluid is in top condition, it is of the highest importance - you need to be able to stop the vehicle without any issues.
Make sure to check the fluids above and top off the ones that need it. Also, change entirely the ones that need it. If you are unaware of how to perform that, or feel that the task would be better suited for a professional, take your vehicle to an auto repair shop for a fluid flush.
