A failure to completely clear rain or snow from the windshield, stuttering instead of gliding across the windshield, smearing or dirt left behind. Anyone, or combination, of those, is an indicator that the windshield wipers should be replaced. Another way to tell if you need replacements is to perform a physical check if the wiper blades appear dry and/or cracked you should replace them.

You can, of course, have a qualified technician replace the windshield wipers on your behalf for a fee but you can also save some money by doing this yourself, it should only take around 15 minutes.

  • The first step is to purchase the replacement wipers. Before heading off to the shop, take a moment to measure each of the windshield wipers. This way you won’t end up buying something you can’t use;
  • Open and remove the new wipers from their packaging and set them aside for now;
  • Carefully lift the windshield wiper arms away from the windshield;
  • Locate the lever, or button, on the underside of the windshield wiper. Gently pull down on the wiper blade to remove it from the arm;
  • Take one of the new windshield wipers, the one corresponding to the side which you just removed. Line the new windshield wiper up with the exposed metal hook, insert the hook through the hole and pull up on the blade until you hear and feel it click into place;
  • Repeat this process for the other side;
  • Start your car and wet the windshield to ensure that the new windshield wipers are installed correctly.
