Thanks to an early screening of “The Dark Knight” courtesy of TechCrunch and MySpace, the Mahalo Daily crew was able to check out the film and get a feel for one of the most hyped movies in recent years. Lon Harris moderates the discourse, and gets the average “person on the street”’s opinion on the film, their favorite character, and whether the late Heath Ledger’s appearance as the Joker will lead to an Oscar nomination.
Thanks TechCrunch!

I liked the episode. I think I will see the Dark Knight, seeing as how it seems to be the best super-hero movie ever, and Iron Man was pretty good. Also, what happened to your YouTube channel? I can’t find it at all.

The intro was very funny, bravo. The first “pedestrian” was a little familiar looking.

I like the part in the movie where he said “Phone Home” and his finger lit up :)

I like how they got the guy from Wall-E to comment on the movie at 1:05.

Kudos to the woman who had the balls to just say it - there probably wouldn’t be the same Oscar buzz around Heath Ledgar if he were still alive. :(

Funny episode, but it felt like the majority of people interviewed were not person’s from the street, but employees of some sort from Tech Crunch or Mahalo daily. It was still good interviews and the guy messing all the movies was hilarious (I laughed out loud), but I was there with a good number of fanboys and they could have given equally if not far more enlightening reviews of the movie.
The person who was at the front of the myspace line was there since 3am and had slept in the red line subway (so he wasn’t the best person you could have gotten an interview from). Another fanboy who dressed like the Joker had arrived the day before because he had mistaken the information provided by the Whysoserious page and the Myspace Black Curtain page. Must have been the make up that got in his eye.
As for my two cents on whether Heath Ledger should receive an Oscar nomination–if not the award– is this: the majority of critics have been attempting to change the classification of the movie from “Comic Book Adaptation” to “Crime Drama.” I believe that this change of genre would be enough to sway the Academy to consider the movie more seriously. Secondly, Heath Ledger’s Joker has several precedent examples of Oscar wins. For example, the method which Ledger played the Joker is equal to Daniel Day-Lewis’ performance in “There Will Be Blood.” The range and descriptive way that Ledger acted in this movie (from changing his tone of voice to the way he walks) is as extraordinary as Lewis’ Daniel Plainview. Another example in the Academy Award history can be drawn to Sir Anthony Hopkins’ portrayal of Hannibal Lector, where once again the actor took on the persona of the character and brought to life that we–the audience–felt like it was a true representation of evil. Without saying anything repetitive, it’s until you see this movie that you will understand what I mean by this.
Overall, the movie was fantastic, but it did fail at two things: (1) it was twenty to thirty minutes too long, but the pace of the film editing was brilliant, and (2) Batman’s speech was sometimes incoherent. These two fallacies, however, are not foundations to skipping this movie. Go watch this movie!

finally a comic movie glorifies the villans. i dont know if im as messed up as some people think, but i found myself laughing when no one else was at some of the things the joker did. i have read comics since i was 12 (for 14 years) and finally they gave justice to a title in movie format. it had the dark dc vertigo feeling that one expects when they open the cover. sorry batman but take the back seat to joker. not your jack nicholson comic relief villian, but a true sick villian.
“until the war in iraq is over make mine marvel”, not tonight. im going for my “no mans land” crossover and im going to have some nice dark dreams.

It’s thrilling experience to watch joker as an ultimate villain especially when a character is perfect blend of humor and suspense, you can’t expect what’s going to happen and when? Heath is superb in his role! we greatly miss him.

it’s not a superhero movie; he’s not a superhero. He has no special powers. It’s a crime drama based on a graphic novel about two insane men fighting each other.

Interesting review from the people who saw the film. I especially took note of the individual who hesitatingly expressed the fact that if Heath Ledger were still alive there might not be any question of him even being nominated for an Academy award. Did she intimate that it would be a sympathy offering? Lastly, love the interviewer! Find out if Lon would consider selling that shirt (with tie affixed)?
