As always, such a useful infromation with the lovely host Leah.
what do i do for the crazy gas prices? (BTW, i am from Israel and here we way $2 for 1 liter, e.g. $8/Galon)
i just don’t drive, the car waits next to the house when ever it is critical to use, and heck
I’ve got bicycle and legs, what do i need the car for anyway?

Yet another well designed informative fun episode! Keep it up Mahalo crew. To cope with the rising gas prices, I’ve been putting more time on my bicycle. The best part is, I get a nice leg exercise out of it and tone my legs up a bit *-)

Excellent, very well done. I coast to save on gas.
July 9th, 2008 at 8:27 am
Love the layout of this episode. Nice combination of man on the street, basic interview and education. Keep it up. I have decided to reduce my speed to save gas, not that I have ever gone over the speed limit;-)

I’ve been driving alot less.
other than that i bought myself a 1971 honda cb175 motorcycle.
its actually turned into a great new passion of mine and it gets upwards of 100mpg.
also i ride my road bicycle as much as possible.
i think the combination of these three things really is saving me alot of money and helping reduce the size of my carbon footprint.
love this episode by the way!

Nice work… thanks for the episode!

Traded in my SUV (Buick Rendevous) which actually got a “reasonable” 22 mpg for a Mercury Milan and I am getting 28.5 MPG - that’s more than 25% improvement. I also drive “carefully” and coast as much as possible - I think that adds at least 1 MPG.

I am walking more, riding my bike, and using SMALL CARS
July 9th, 2008 at 11:50 am
Scion xB, baby! Great little vehicle. Consistently gets at least 35 mpg. Wouldn’t change it for anything, even though it looks like a Wonderbread truck….

In the UK Gas Prices are 3x more expensive than in the states, why are you complaining?
July 9th, 2008 at 1:24 pm
very well done…. entertaining, good information (dang, i gotta empty my trunk–duh!??!?!), and a some funny in there. loved the Hummer interview… guy was honest about the hybrid SUVs being a fraud–refreshing!
July 9th, 2008 at 1:53 pm
Solution: buy a Vespa. 50-75mpg (5-10$/week, instead of 100-250$). And it’s faster in traffic jams.
Scooters and vespas are exploding due to higher gas prices. Total cost for my 50 mile per day vespa is 10$/week in gas, 40$/month in loan. 40$/month in insurance. So 120$/month in total cost. Oh, and it’s free parking in most cities.
Better for the environment. Cheaper on gas. Faster commutes. Free parking.
Easy peasie pudding pie.

Sorry, being Canadian my conversions were wrong. 75-100mpg. And insurance should be cheaper in the states. Oh yeah, and I had to pay 1.75$/litre (6$/gallon, right?) the other day for gas. If I had an SUV, that’d be nearly 150$ for the same fillup/distance as my 10$ fillup.

What I am doing about high gas prices? NOT DRIVING!!! I have taken a stand and now I bike wherever I go. To be honest, I would like to see gas prices go to $10 a gallon. At that point, I would hope people would change the way they think about cars.
July 9th, 2008 at 3:17 pm
Very informative…I learned a lot from that episode on saving gas…
Leah did a GREAT job of picking out the people she interviewed.
I forgot about the weight in my car trunk so I took out my golf clubs,
tool chest, bowling ball, bocce balls, baseball glove, ball and bat, lounge
chairs, art easel and hard hat. Actually, I don’t feel the pinch, I just drive
to work and back.
July 9th, 2008 at 5:24 pm
ride a bike! Woot!
July 9th, 2008 at 7:35 pm
nice work leah (as always).
how do I save money on gas? I bought a Citroen C4 turbo diesel and I get 45 mpg and 35 mpg when I drive on the german autobahn (well I am from austria) with an average speed of around 100 mph which is kind of cool. So I get gas around once every month but I drive to work every day. So buy european cars (even french) and save money.
btw we are paying $8,4/gallon in austria for diesel!
July 9th, 2008 at 7:42 pm
Love the comments. We are learning from each other. I have decided to walk or ride my bike whenever it is possible.
July 9th, 2008 at 8:40 pm
Great episode! My job is 18 miles from home so I have to drive, luckily there are a couple of people I can carpool with. Also I try not to make any unnecessary trips, and walk or bike when I can.
July 9th, 2008 at 8:53 pm
Poor Cadillac dealer, they’re making some awesome looking cars right now. I bike to work to save money and I’m planning on trading in the truck for a small car, probably a Honda Fit. Moving closer to work, etc.
July 9th, 2008 at 10:47 pm
I’m lucky that gas prices don’t directly impact me, living in NYC, I either walk or take the subway when I travel.
July 10th, 2008 at 12:16 am
Nice show !!, Looking good Leah…

Ok so posting my comment to the youtube page doesn’t seem to be working….
I found this pic in a photo album dated September 1998. I was with my family in Texas, and that’s what the gas prices were there.

Sorry for the poor quality - I snapped that of an old underexposed pic with my camera phone, cause my Canon S1 IS seems to be dying.

just saw this episode
but I can’t understand why the people are complaining
here in Germany everybody would be happy with this gas prices.
we have to pay $2,36 for 1 liter this means $8,93/Gallon
July 10th, 2008 at 4:37 pm
I live in South Wales, UK. Prices here in a petrol station (other than a supermarket) are the equivalent of $9.45 a gallon. I bought 2 gallons of petrol today and two chocolate bars at ($1.28 each). A £20 note wasn’t enough to pay for that little lot. I don’t get paid anywhere near the garbage men in the latest episode. I don’t know how much loger I can afford to live here!!

@ non-US citizens:
It’s true that cost of gas in the US is still a LOT cheaper than it is in many other countries, but the problem is in 1) our lifestyle, and 2) the rapid increase that we’ve seen.
Gas has increased roughly 100% over the past year, doubling the amount of money we’ve been used to spending. People who have tight budgets suddenly have more money going into transportation than they are used to. Also, Living near big cities, the standard has been for people to live within 30-50 miles of their place of the city and then commute every day. The cost of driving to work doubles, and many States don’t have good public inter-city transport.
Also, my understanding is that most European cities were developed before cars, so they aren’t nearly as car-centric as American cities are.

The Prius is great if you want to save a few dollars. But it’s really not good for the environment because of all the pollution it took to make the 30lbs of Nickel for the battery.
Pound for pound, making a Prius contributes more carbon to the atmosphere than making a Hummer, largely due to the environmental cost of the 30 pounds of nickel in the hybrid’s battery. Of course, the hybrid quickly erases that carbon deficit on the road, thanks to its vastly superior fuel economy. Still, the comparison suggests a more sensible question. If a new Prius were placed head-to-head with a used car, would the Prius win? Don’t bet on it. Making a Prius consumes 113 million BTUs, according to sustainability engineer Pablo Päster. A single gallon of gas contains about 113,000 Btus, so Toyota’s green wonder guzzles the equivalent of 1,000 gallons before it clocks its first mile. A used car, on the other hand, starts with a significant advantage: The first owner has already paid off its carbon debt. Buy a decade-old Toyota Tercel, which gets a respectable 35 mpg, and the Prius will have to drive 100,000 miles to catch up

Did anyone else notice that ill-informed sticker at 1 min 28-29 seconds. “Warning turn off cellular phone” WTF? Bad science and urban myths are now making their way to gas station warnings?
July 21st, 2008 at 2:40 pm
In Denmark, and most of nothern Europe prices are $2.40/litre which is more than $9/gallon
Woo, my bank account is going to love so much going to america this fall :P

There is a really simple solution to gas prices, and the major car companies are finally starting the ball rolling. The answer = Hydrogen on Demand. Ford, BMW, Honda, and More are already rolling these out, but wait who wants to spend another $21,000. I want to drive my hummer and my mustang. And now I can. I got a easy to install Hydrogen On Demand Fuel kit from PASS, check out their website, it installed in an hour, and was 1/3 the cost of other HHO hydrogen on demand systems. I now am getting 42% better gas mileage in my hummer, and 38% more MPG in my mustang. See thier website. http://www.passonfuel.com

The petrol price exploded , that’s my big pain … So we all have to leave up to performante cars and to choose cars with small engine .
I like the idea of Toyota , Prius model . An hybrid engine , with a small average that offers you performance , confort and quality to a good price . But , I have tot dezagreed all Hummer models with big engines , big prices . These models eat properly gas .
So , cars like Smart , Vw Polo , Peugeot 1007 , Citroen C3 deserve our attention .

It is true that the gas prices have jumped so much; It is worrying for people, but also for yhe economy market; This think
could destabilize the world economy.
