MD018 – How to Clean Your Keyboard
So, you’ve eaten lunch at your desk a few too many times, and now you’ve developed a healthy layer of grime and crumbs on your keyboard. Never fear! With a few tools and the right know-how, you can save yourself the sticky fingers. Just beware of the pancake syrup.

Hey Veronica,
I heard about this story once on BOL or the Lab with Leo Laporte . It’s about how to clean your keyboard in the dishwasher –> http://www.boingboing.net/2005/05/30/clean-your-keyboard-.html
Regards,
Andy

Good tip!
Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but the video downloaded by iTunes could not be transferred to my iPhone. If got the error “…because it cannot be played on this iPhone.”
They will normally transfer w/o any problems.

Quick note — this came through my iTunes feed but was not able to be moved to my iPod. When I tried, I get the message that the file “was not moved because it cannot be played on the iPod”.

Hey Now Veronica,
The best way I’ve found is to turn the keyboard upside down and gently tap it so all little stuff falls out. Works great, you’ll be amazed on how much stuff is on your desk after that. That was a funny episode.
Thx,
Catto

This was one of your best episodes yet! That was funny when the keyboard did not work. Lol, Good job Veronica!
December 5th, 2007 at 9:47 am
Did you plug the keyboard in a different spot from where you unplugged it?
December 5th, 2007 at 10:40 am
Just an FYI. MD018 won’t transfer to my iPhone. Says not formatted for device.
December 5th, 2007 at 12:21 pm
Couldn’t you at least clean off your desk first?
December 5th, 2007 at 1:05 pm
Very funny, I hope nobody was following along, pausing as needed, to clean their own keyboard!
My first impression when I saw the soda (and then the syrup) hit was “well, at $20 for a new one, I can’t be bothered to waste much time on this one!”
December 5th, 2007 at 2:45 pm
lol :)
Oldschool tip: put the keys (not the board!) in a linen-sack/sock or whatsoever and put them in the washing mashine.. cold wash.. et voila: shinier than new :)

Shouldn’t this have been entitled…”How NOT to clean a keyboard”?
December 5th, 2007 at 3:17 pm
I’ve found running the board thru a dishwasher WITHOUT soap and allowing it to air dry for at least 2 days works pretty well. It also saves the tedium of removing all the key caps and the memory test of recalling where all the keys go back on.
On the other hand, a new keyboard is about U$D 6 @ Big Lots. . .
December 5th, 2007 at 4:56 pm
On most keyboards, after removing the keys, you should be able to unscrew the casing to remove the circuitry. You can then commence your washing.

I just went through the process of cleaning a really grimy keyboard. No syrup or shoe polish, but there was stickiness from a spilled beer from years ago (blame my ex-roommate). Eventually I gave up and bought a new one, but I did learn a few things. Q-Tips and isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) work very well for cleaning keys and it also dries fast. I understand it also will not damage electronics. Canned air should be held upright while spraying (tsk tsk Veronica) if you tilt it liquid sprays out all over your keyboard.

Loved it. My keyboard will be cleaned tonight :)

OK, so how about a PowerBook G4 or MacBook Pro keyboard? My Pismo G3 laptop keyboard used to come out completely from the top so that it could be shaken, not stirred.
I don’t see any way to do that with a PowerBook G4 keyboard, but here’s a nice how-to for the MacBook Pro: http://www.takeitapart.net/archives/macbook-pro/

No kidding! I have an old laptop and removing the keys is not so simplistic. What would you suggest?
December 6th, 2007 at 5:59 am
Yeah, I know! Laptops are a bit different from keyboards and aren’t too simplistic to clean. Any ideas, anyone?
December 6th, 2007 at 10:26 am
The whole time I was thinking ‘that keyboards a goner. replacement coming up!’. But I applaud the effort. Being in tech support I will say that nasty keyboards are one of the worst things in the world. People are just nasty. Didn’t your momma show you how to wash your hands? And believe it or not I once had someone say that they didn’t clean it because they didn’t know what to use. So perhaps MaHalo Daily will edumacate them today! :)

OMG. How _not_ to clean a keyboard.
If you have a single sticky key, pop the keycap and clean with isopropyl alcohol and q-tips. Blow out with canned air. Pop the keycap back on, viola.
If you have a bunch of sticky keys, pop the keycaps off and remove the back of the keyboard. Pull out the circuit board and the blister pack. Wash all the pieces separately in the top rack of the dishwasher without soap and without a heated dry cycle. You can wash the keycaps in a bag in your washing machine.
If you have an air compressor, blow it out until you can’t see any more liquid spraying out. (This will cut your drying time substantially) Allow to air dry. If you can’t pull the back off the keyboard, it can take a week to dry.
Now I have done all this (on a bet… barbeque sauce, dr. pepper and crushed oreos) and it does work. But it’s a lot easier and more cost effective to just buy a new keyboard.
December 7th, 2007 at 4:07 pm
I think that if you spill something over your keyboard, then you should instantly unplug it and turn it upside down, and whatever doesn’t drip out will stick to the underside. If you do this quick enough it shouldn’t touch your PCB.
Then pop off all the keys (remembering to take a photo of how they went together), and lash them in a sink of warm soapy water and swish them about. Whilst these are drying (I rinsed them off and put them in the airing cupboard wrapped in a towel) try to remove as much gunk from the keyboard itself as you can.
I was lucky enough to have an Apple Pro Keyboard (last edition), and for it not to happen to my MacBook. A friend of mine lost a 17″ PowerBook to a Pot Noodle, so try not to do it in the first place.

One thing I’ve learned from working with electronics… if possible, after washing it with water, soak the whole thing in alcohol. It forces out the water, and evaporates quickly.

Sorry, but lame… both in concept and execution.
